The Scenario: A cracked leather jacket and a shrinking cork

A collector stored a leather jacket and a case of wine in a dry basement closet. The jacket cracked at the shoulders and two wine corks had visibly shrunk, letting air into the bottles.

The collector set up humidity control by zone:

1. Wine at 55–65% RH A small humidifier or humidity pack in the wine area keeps corks swollen and sealed.

2. Leather and wood at 40–55% RH A low-output unit in the wardrobe area protects leather and wooden items.

3. Measure each zone A hygrometer per zone — closets and basements vary more than living rooms.

The Result: Corks and leather saved

Within a month the leather softened and the cork shrink halted. The collector now checks zone hygrometers seasonally, and the wine drinks properly.
