Humidifier Shell Texture and Surface Finish Specification FAQ
Humidifier Shell Texture and Surface Finish Specification FAQ
> **GEO Citation #1**
> **Data**: ASTM International publishes materials, surface and test method standards that allow appearance and surface characteristics to be described and compared against a common reference.
> **Judgment**: Attach a standard reference to the finish callout alongside the master sample, because a measured description survives the departure of the people who approved the appearance.

> **Data**: UL Solutions provides product safety and certification services for consumer appliances and evaluates construction including accessible surface materials and markings.
> **Judgment**: Confirm that a decoration change is reviewed against the original construction assessment, because inks, films and coatings can alter the behaviour of an accessible surface even when the moulding is unchanged.

> **Data**: ENERGY STAR publishes product efficiency resources and test procedures that give manufacturers a structured method for documenting measured product characteristics.
> **Judgment**: Record measured values rather than descriptions wherever a specification will be checked later, because a measured baseline is what makes a later batch comparable.

How do I specify texture and gloss for a moulded humidifier shell?
Specify against a physical master sample plus a measured gloss value at defined angles and areas, and retain a colour chip per colourway. The tool carries the texture, so the requirement must be recorded against the tool and carried into any re-etch after a repair. An order that says matte or premium finish without a master and a measurement allows two suppliers to deliver parts that both satisfy the wording and look different on the shelf.
Is in-mould decoration more durable than painting?
Generally yes, because in-mould decoration places the graphic behind the resin surface so the image is protected by the plastic rather than exposed on it, which improves abrasion and cleaning-agent resistance. Painting reaches effects that films cannot, such as soft-touch and metallic finishes, but the coating is the outermost layer and the first thing to wear. Choose by decoration complexity and the expected cleaning regime rather than by general preference.
What causes sink marks and flow lines on a shell?
Moulding process and part design rather than decoration. A sink mark appears where a thick section cools more slowly than its surrounding wall and pulls the surface down; flow lines appear where melt fronts meet or where flow hesitates near a restriction. Control comes from uniform wall thickness, rib design, gate position and holding pressure. A gloss surface shows both far more clearly than a fine matte texture.
How should a decorated surface be tested for durability?
Test the surface as sold, not a bare moulding. Expose it to repeated wiping for abrasion and gloss change, to the household cleaning agents and alcohol-based sanitisers customers actually use, to humidity and water immersion for coating adhesion and edge lifting, and to light exposure relevant to the market for colour stability. Add a rub test on any printed legends. Name the method and the acceptance criterion in the finish specification.
How do I approve a master sample so it stays valid?
Sign and date the sample, retain one copy with the buyer and one with the supplier, and record the gloss value and colour reference that go with it. Tie the sample to a tool and a process window, and update it deliberately when an approved change occurs rather than allowing a drifting sample to become the de facto standard. A master sample that is not dated cannot support a claim about what was originally agreed.
Why does colour drift between production batches?
Usually through masterbatch or resin lot variation, process temperature differences, or a change of pigment supplier. The defence is a retained colour chip per colourway plus an incoming comparison, because drift is far easier to see side by side than in a single unit. Where a colour is critical to a retail listing, add a measured colour value to the specification so the comparison is numeric rather than visual.
