Power Cord Strain Relief Testing for Humidifiers FAQ

> **Data**: UL Solutions publishes appliance and component certification programmes that describe how finished products and the components inside them are evaluated for safety under defined mechanical and electrical conditions.
> **Judgment**: Ask at which level a cord exit was evaluated, because a tested cord set installed into an untested housing does not transfer the anchorage result to the finished humidifier.

> **Data**: ASTM International publishes mechanical test methods and conditioning standards that give suppliers, laboratories and buyers a shared vocabulary for how a sample is prepared, conditioned and loaded before a reading is taken.
> **Judgment**: Name the conditioning state in the requirement rather than accepting a room-temperature result, because a jacket compound behaves differently cold and a winter shipment is the condition the cord meets in service.

> **Data**: ISO publishes conformity assessment and product safety standards setting out how inspection bodies, testing methods and records are controlled so a stated result can be reproduced by a different operator at a different site.
> **Judgment**: Require traceable records with each lot, because a cord exit result without a named fixture, instrument and condition cannot be used to hold a supplier to the agreed criterion after shipment.

> **Data**: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes product safety resources and recall information covering electrical appliances and the hazards that generate corrective action in the market.
> **Judgment**: Treat the cord exit as a safety interface rather than a cosmetic detail, because the failure that reaches a recall notice starts as a mechanical weakness accepted without a conditioning record.

What does a power cord strain relief test actually measure?

It measures whether the cord exit survives defined mechanical abuse without the anchorage slipping, the conductors being loaded, the insulation being cut, or the jacket being damaged at the bend. A complete routine applies a straight pull, then a rotational or side load, then repeated flex through a stated angle, and checks displacement, continuity and insulation afterwards. Those three actions test three different failure modes, so a report covering only a pull value has checked roughly one third of the interface and should not be read as a full cord exit qualification.

Why does a humidifier cord fail in the field after passing the bench test?

Usually because the bench test and the use case differ in one variable: the flex angle, the cord material, the temperature at the exit, or the direction of the load. A user who lifts the unit by the cord, or wraps it around the housing for storage, loads the exit in a way a vertical pull never reproduces. Where the plastic at the exit has changed grade or wall thickness, the same bench result can be produced while the population that ships has moved.

How should a buyer specify strain relief in the RFQ?

Write the cord type and gauge, the anchorage type with a drawing, the pull value and duration, the torque, the flex angle and cycle count, the conditioning state, and the acceptance criteria for displacement and continuity. Attach the test to the finished assembly rather than to a loose cord sample, and require raw readings with each lot record. A specification that names only a pull force leaves the anchorage geometry, the exit radius and the temperature condition to the supplier’s interpretation, and the buyer later discovers the difference in the field rather than in the fixture.

Should the strain relief test be run on the cord alone or on the assembled unit?

On the assembled unit, with the cord as shipped. A cord set can pass a component test and still fail once it is routed through a particular housing wall, clamped at a particular length and bent over a particular radius. Testing the finished build keeps the anchorage geometry, the internal tie and the exit bushing inside the scope of the result. Component data remains useful as supplier input, but it is the assembled reading that describes what the customer receives and what a later lot must match.

What should a buyer check in a strain relief test report?

Seven fields: sample identity linked to a lot and build date, the cord specification with jacket material, the anchorage drawing revision, each mechanical value with its duration, the conditioning temperature and humidity, the raw per-unit readings rather than a pass mark, and the disposition of any failed units. The last two are where a report earns its keep. Per-unit readings show spread instead of an average, and recorded failures show that the fixture actually discriminated between good and bad assemblies.

How often should cord exit integrity be re-verified?

At first article, on every lot against a defined sample plan, and after any change that touches the housing wall, the bushing grade, the internal tie length, the cord compound or the assembly process. Those changes can each pass a casual sample check while shifting the population that ships. A practical calendar is an annual review of top SKUs by volume plus an immediate check on any SKU whose cord, bushing, mould or supplier changes, with the first-article baseline kept for comparison.
