Humidifier Carton Stacking Endurance Test FAQ

Data: ISTA publishes transport packaging test protocols that simulate the distribution hazards a packaged consumer product meets between the line and the shelf.

Judgment: Choose the protocol that matches your route rather than the cheapest one, because a stacking result is only relevant to the handling and storage cycle it was built to represent.

Data: ASTM International maintains test methods covering compression, packaging performance and the conditioning of paperboard and assembled packages.

Judgment: Condition cartons before testing, because a box that performs well dry can lose a large share of its compression strength after days in humid air.

Data: ISO publishes international standards used by manufacturers and buyers as a common reference for packaging specification and conformity assessment.

Judgment: Record the stack height and the dwell time in the specification, because a box that holds for an hour can still creep out of shape over a season in a warehouse.

What is a carton stacking endurance test for humidifiers?

It is a compression test that holds a loaded carton under a defined vertical load for a defined time and then measures the deformation and any loss of strength. Unlike a short crush test that finds the failure point in seconds, an endurance test runs for hours or days to capture creep, the slow deformation of paperboard under steady load. For a humidifier the carton is heavier than the product suggests because of the water tank and accessories, so the stack load in a warehouse is higher than a buyer often assumes. The test answers whether the bottom carton still protects the product at the end of a season.

How should cartons be preconditioned before a stacking test?

Condition them to a stated temperature and relative humidity before applying load, and hold them there for long enough to reach equilibrium. Paperboard is hygroscopic, so its compression strength falls as moisture content rises, and a carton tested dry will overstate what the box can carry in a humid warehouse or a sea container. The conditioning state belongs in the test record because it is the single largest reason two labs report different results on identical boxes. Keep the samples wrapped during transport to the test rig so they do not drift from the conditioned state.

What load should a humidifier carton support?

Calculate it from the stack you expect, not from a rule of thumb. Take the number of cartons the warehouse stacks, multiply by the gross weight of one carton, and subtract the bottom carton itself to get the load it must carry. Then add a safety margin for mis-stacking and for the higher loads that appear when a pallet is placed on top of a partial stack. If the stack height is unknown, test to the tallest stack the container can physically hold, and record that assumption, because the load figure is only meaningful alongside the stacking assumption that produced it.

How is stacking endurance recorded and judged?

Record the initial carton height, the load, the ambient condition, and the height at intervals through the run. The judgement is usually made on deformation and on residual compression strength after the dwell: measure deflection against a limit, then load the same carton to failure to see how much capacity remains. Photograph any bulging, creasing or panel separation, and note whether the product inside moved or was damaged. A carton that holds its dimension and retains most of its strength has passed a real endurance test rather than only a short crush test.

How do you specify stacking endurance in a purchase order?

State the protocol, the load, the dwell time, the ambient conditioning, and the acceptance criteria for deformation and residual strength. Add the board grade and flute configuration of the carton, the internal fitments and the gross weight of the packed unit, since a change to any of these changes the result. Require a report per carton configuration and a retained sample from the qualified run. Add a change trigger covering board supplier, box maker tooling and internal packaging, because substitutions here are common and usually invisible from the outside.

Why do stacking failures appear in the warehouse, not the truck?

Truck rides are short and the load is dynamic, so a carton can survive transit and still fail after weeks in a stack. Endurance failures come from creep: paperboard gradually deforms under a steady load, and the process accelerates with humidity and with time. A warehouse in a warm, damp climate can soften a box that performed perfectly in a dry test room. That is why the failure appears at the bottom of a pallet three weeks after receipt, and why the endurance test conditions should mirror storage rather than only transport.
