What is the difference between bypass and fan-powered furnace humidifiers?

A fan-powered unit carries its own blower and delivers more gallons per day, which suits larger homes and heat pumps with low plenum temperatures. Can a whole-house humidifier run when the furnace is not heating?

Bypass and fan-powered designs cannot humidify the house without airflow, so they are wired to run only on a heat or blower call. Running a bypass unit without the fan simply wets the pad and dumps moisture into the duct without distributing it, wasting water and risking microbial growth. If humidity is needed while the furnace is idle, the correct choices are a steam humidifier, which produces vapor on demand, or a standalone room humidifier for the affected space.

Why does the humidifier run but the house still reads dry?

Usually one of three faults: a unit undersized for the home, a bypass duct routed in the wrong direction so almost no air crosses the pad, or a humidistat wired to run outside a heat call so moisture never distributes. Heat pumps deliver lower supply-air temperatures, which cuts bypass output, so specify a fan-powered unit instead. Homes with a heat-recovery or energy-recovery ventilator bring in dry fresh air continuously and lower indoor relative humidity, so upsize capacity to offset the ventilation load.
