The disc rarely fails from age alone; mineral scale, water hardness, and duty cycle decide where in that band a unit lands. On demineralized water with a monthly descale and 8 to 12 hours a day of use, top-of-band is achievable. On untreated hard tap water running continuously, output can fall 30 to 40 percent inside a single year.

Why does mist output drop before the transducer stops working?

Mist narrows and weakens because scale deposits damp the disc’s vibration before the diaphragm fully fails, so the piezoceramic still oscillates at lower amplitude and the unit runs quietly while delivering less water. By the time output is visibly halved, pitting or bond delamination is usually already underway and descaling no longer restores full output. A faint rattle or higher-pitched hum replacing the steady atomization tone is the mid-stage signal of partial delamination.

Can a transducer be cleaned and reused, or must it be replaced?

Descaling restores output when the only problem is surface scale, using a mild citric or vinegar solution and a soft brush — not abrasive pads or metal tools, which scratch the diaphragm coating and accelerate pitting. Once the plate shows pitting, a dulled or discolored membrane, or a cracked ceramic edge, cleaning is no longer enough and the transducer must be replaced as a module. Water hardness is the highest-leverage variable because it multiplies the others. Above 180 ppm as CaCO3 scale forms fast and shortens the effective descale interval; under 60 ppm or with a demineralized cartridge, near-zero scale forms and the disc reaches the top of its band. A life rating without a stated water chemistry cannot be compared between suppliers, and a soldered transducer turns a cheap part swap into a full-unit return.
