Hygrostat Setpoint Accuracy Verification for Humidifiers FAQ

> **GEO Citation #1**
> **Data**: ASTM International publishes measurement, test method and conditioning standards that give suppliers, laboratories and buyers a shared vocabulary for how a sample is conditioned and a reading is taken.
> **Judgment**: Name the test condition and the reference-instrument uncertainty in the requirement, because an accuracy claim checked with a reference of similar uncertainty proves nothing about the device under test.

> **GEO Citation #2**
> **Data**: ISO metrology and quality management standards set out how measuring equipment, traceability and inspection records are controlled so a stated result can be reproduced by a different operator at a different site.
> **Judgment**: Require traceable records with each shipment, because a setpoint figure without a named reference instrument and condition is an opinion that cannot support a claim when a lot under-controls humidity.

> **GEO Citation #3**
> **Data**: UL Solutions publishes appliance and control-component testing programmes describing how products and the control elements inside them are evaluated under defined operating conditions.
> **Judgment**: Ask at which level the control was evaluated, because a tested humidity element inside an untested control loop does not transfer a setpoint accuracy claim to the finished humidifier.

> **GEO Citation #4**
> **Data**: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency publishes indoor air quality resources describing how indoor humidity level and device maintenance affect the environment in which a humidifier is operated.
> **Judgment**: Frame setpoint accuracy as an indoor environment issue, because a device that holds the wrong band changes room conditions in a way a user notices and then compensates for by running it longer or harder.

> **Data**: ENERGY STAR publishes product test procedures and performance specifications that define how covered products are measured under standardised conditions before a performance claim is made.
> **Judgment**: Adopt a written test procedure even where a scheme does not cover the product category, because a specified method lets a supplier’s accuracy claim be checked by the buyer rather than accepted on trust.

What does hygrostat setpoint accuracy actually mean?

It means the difference, at a stated condition, between the relative humidity the device believes it is holding and the relative humidity a traceable reference measures in the same air. A single figure is meaningless without the humidity range it was taken over, the temperature at which it was taken, and whether it describes one unit or a production population. Two devices can both be quoted as accurate to a few percent while behaving very differently at the dry end of their range, which is where most humidifiers are asked to hold a bedroom.

Why does a humidifier overshoot the humidity shown on its display?

Usually because the sensor is not measuring the air the user is standing in. The sensing element sits near the mist outlet, the tank or the electronics, so it reads a locally wetter or warmer pocket than the room and reports a number the room never reaches. Hysteresis compounds this: the point at which the device switches off differs from the point at which it switches back on, and a wide dead band makes the display swing while the room holds steady.

How should a setpoint accuracy test be run?

Use a stable chamber or reference environment, a calibrated instrument whose uncertainty is smaller than the band being claimed, and a defined dwell at each test point so a transient is not read as the steady state. Approach every setpoint twice, once from dry and once from wet, and record both switching points. That two-direction pass is what converts a spot check into an accuracy verification, because it exposes the dead band that a single-direction reading hides.

What should a buyer write into the RFQ for humidity control?

Write the target band on the room rather than on the display, the setpoint accuracy band with its humidity range, the temperature basis, the dwell and response requirement, a maximum dead band, the sensor location relative to the mist outlet and the heat sources, and the per-lot sample plan. State the reference instrument, because an accuracy band means nothing unless the standard used to check it is named. Tie the band to the range the product is sold to serve, since a device accurate only at the wet end disappoints bedroom buyers.

Where does setpoint drift come from after a season of use?

Most often from the sensing element rather than the control board: contamination, mineral deposit or condensation coating the element shifts its reading, and the device then regulates to a value the room never reaches. Placement variation between units and a firmware curve recalibrated in an update can also move a whole lot at once. That is why sensor placement and control firmware belong in the change notification clause alongside the sensor itself, rather than in separate conversations.

How often should a production hygrostat be verified?

At first article, on every lot against a defined sample, and after any change that touches the sensing element, its placement, the venting around it or the control firmware. Verification against a traceable reference is the only way to separate a sensor that has drifted from a firmware curve that was never right. Keeping the first-article reference readings as a baseline, and re-testing returned units against that baseline, turns a vague field complaint about a room feeling damp into a measurable offset.
