Humidity Control for Musical Instruments: Guitars, Pianos, and Violins

Acoustic instruments are built from thin, tensioned wood that responds dramatically to humidity: below 40% RH, tops crack and fretboards shrink; above 60%, wood swells and joints loosen. Instrument-grade humidity control usually means 40–55%.

The Scenario: The guitar that cracked in winter

A guitarist’s acoustic developed a hairline crack along the soundboard one February. The luthier’s first question was about room humidity — it had been sitting at 22% in the apartment.

The guitarist replaced the humidifier habit and kept the room at 45% through winter. No new cracks, and the repaired soundboard held its tone — humidity control became part of instrument maintenance.
