What humidity level protects guitars and pianos?
Aim for 40–60% relative humidity, with most instrument makers’ sweet spot around 45–55%. Below about 40% wood dries and cracks and fret ends become sharp; above about 60% wood swells, joints loosen and mold risk rises. Hold the range steadily — sudden swings damage wood more than a slow drift.
Can a room humidifier really protect a guitar?
Yes, for instruments kept out on stands, because a room humidifier holds the whole space in the safe band. For guitars stored in cases, combine it with an in-case humidifier, since a closed case traps its own dry air and bypasses the room unit. Always confirm with a hygrometer rather than assuming the mist is enough.
Why do wood instruments crack in winter?
Cold outdoor air holds very little moisture, and heating systems warm it without adding water, so indoor relative humidity often falls to 15–30%. Dry air pulls moisture out of the wood, which shrinks, and tension cracks appear on tops and soundboards. A humidifier restores the 40–60% band that keeps the wood stable.
Is 40–60% RH also right for wooden furniture and floors?
Yes. The same range protects furniture, hardwood floors, doors and trim: below 40% you see gaps, splits and loose joints; above 60–65% you see swelling, warping and mold risk. A room humidifier plus a hygrometer holds the environment, and keeping the range steady matters more than the exact number.
Should I use a case humidifier or a room humidifier?
Use both, for different jobs. A room humidifier stabilizes the environment and protects furniture, floors and instruments on display; an in-case humidifier protects a cased guitar, whose closed case creates its own microclimate the room unit cannot reach. During heating season, run both and check the readings weekly.
How do I know if my room is dry enough to need a humidifier?
Use a digital hygrometer placed away from the humidifier’s mist outlet and read it over several days, especially when heating runs. If relative humidity sits below 40%, humidification is needed to protect wood; between 40–60%, maintain the level; above 60%, ventilate or run a dehumidifier to protect both wood and health.
