What material is an evaporative humidifier wick made of?
Most wicks are a nonwoven blend of cellulose, polyester, and a binder, or a treated paper honeycomb. The fiber must lift water by capillary action and hold a continuous wet film while air passes through. Honeycomb paper is the cheapest option but softens and sags when saturated, while cellulose-polyester nonwovens hold shape longer because the polyester fraction resists hydrolysis. Premium designs add a rigid honeycomb core or an antimicrobial treatment to control sagging and biofilm.
How often does an evaporative humidifier wick need replacing?
Plan on one to three months in moderate water hardness and as short as two to four weeks above 180 ppm calcium carbonate. In soft water below 60 ppm, a wick can last eight to twelve weeks. The filter does not fail abruptly: absorption capacity falls as minerals fill the fiber, so output drops first, then the element stiffens and crusts. Replace on measured output, not on a printed calendar.
Can you wash and reuse an evaporative wick filter?
Rinsing loose sediment is fine, but washing does not reverse mineralization. Once calcium and magnesium salts bind inside the fiber, capillary action is permanently reduced and the wick cannot return to rated absorption. A stiff wick with falling output should be replaced. An OEM that markets washable wicks for hard-water regions is effectively selling a higher return rate rather than a longer-life part.
What specs predict wick filter life?
Six fields decide performance: absorption rate in grams of water per gram of fiber, grammage in grams per square meter, thickness and pleat count, wettability or surfactant treatment, antimicrobial treatment, and rated life at a stated water hardness. Ask suppliers for absorption measured to an ASTM water-absorption method rather than a marketing description. A wick with no rated-life figure at a named hardness is unqualified, and its real replacement interval will surface in after-sales instead.
Why does mist output drop when the reservoir is still full?
Because the wick has mineralized. Calcium and magnesium carbonate precipitate into the fiber and block the pores that perform the wicking, so the top of the element dries even though water sits in the tank. The machine still runs, so users blame the humidifier rather than the filter. Putting replacement intervals in the manual and on the pack converts a perceived defect into a normal consumable and is the cheapest lever an OEM has over filter-related returns.
What should go into a wick filter purchase order?
Five gates and a set of numbers: absorption rate to an ASTM method, grammage, thickness and pleat count, wet rigidity under a saturated load, and rated life measured by accelerated mineral loading before output falls 20%. Require UL-recognized components in the assembly and confirm the filter does not change the airflow and thermal profile the unit was certified against.
